Voicing Artistry
Ultimately, the artistic value of an organ is
always measured by its sound quality, regardless of all technical
marvels that make it work. There is no doubt that among many aspects
of the organ building craft, pipe voicing is an art in itself.
It cannot be overemphasized how important proper voicing is for
the final perception by a listener.
At Lewtak Pipe Organ Builders we pay the greatest
attention to this area of organ building and organ restoration.
We offer a full range of voicing and re-voicing services at competitive
rates, for both flue and reed ranks. In this respect, the quality
of our work is easily demonstrated. To our potential clients we
offer a free CD recorded on
our organ at St. Joseph’s in Camillus, which reveals the
sonic character of this instrument. We are confident that you
will be able to hear the difference, because the results clearly
speak for themselves.
The key person behind our voicing service is
Tom Lewtak. His skill came from working and learning from one
of the prodigies of European pipe voicing, Mogens Pedersen. Mr.
Pedersen for over twenty years was the chief voicer of the legendary
Frobenius Organ Builders of Copenhagen, Denmark. Tom was fortunate
to acquire his voicing expertise from one of the best voicers
in Europe.
To work on pipes, we use a two-rank tracker
voicing organ, that we custom built. For larger pipes we utilize
a custom-designed, only six-note voicing windchest with adjustable
toe openings. Our voicing organ is a completely portable, normal
size instrument which we often let our clients use while their
organ is being worked on.
